Banquet Time!
April 30, 2016

It’s that time of the year where banquets are rolling out to wrap up the school year. I enjoy going to banquets because it’s a nice way to reminisce about the accomplishments that were made. In addition, it gives me an exciting opportunity to wear nicer dresses and indulge in delicious food! Yesterday was the start of banquet season and I attended two banquets back to back (loving that hustle).

The first banquet I went to was for the CIS department. A ton of Hawaiian-styled food was served, which means endless plates of chicken teriyaki and kalua pork! During the banquet, I ended up getting two awards during the ceremony. The first award was given by the department chair for outstanding leadership. When the department chair was describing how he met me before I started college and watched me progressed through the years, I wanted to ball my eyes out but didn’t. The second award was given by my club president for the contributions I’ve made to the club.

When I started college, I knew I wanted to be involved in the cyber security field. I initially had a setback because of a mistake I made, but didn’t let it stop me from achieving my goals. I used that setback as a motivation to push me to work harder than ever and never give up. Over the years, I participated in any activities I can to learn some neat offensive and defensive security skills. At school, I wanted to be in a club’s elected board and ended up being one of the vice president’s in the forensics/security club. I had an awesome opportunity to work with a great team and deploy my strategic skills. Lastly, I became a TA for the department during fall where I assisted two professors in grading and tutoring. A simple question out of curiosity gave me a second job that I’m thankful for. I enjoy doing what I do and have no regrets!

“Whenever I needed something done, I would ask Nancy and she would tell me that she’ll have it done within 10 minutes.” – Club President

After the first banquet, I drove off to a country club nearby for my boyfriend’s engineering club’s banquet. It was a masquerade themed event so we brought matching masks! At this event, it was my boyfriend’s turn to reflect on his experience as an engineering student and the contributions he made. I ended up getting a certificate from this club for developing a website for them. By this time, I was pretty full from the first banquet so I snacked on a scoop of cucumber salad. The first time we went to this banquet together was back in 2014. Time flies!

Congratulations on your awards, Nancy! You deserve them! It’s clear that you’ve worked hard in your undergrad and did well despite that setback you had ^_____^ It’s great that your department chair summarised your achievements and from what they remembered about you when you first started. I’d have been quite teary-eyed myself if I were in your shoes.

And a masquerade banquet is certainly different! I like the masks you guys wore! Classy and blue! Love it 😀 Congrats to your boyfriend for his achievements ^^ And I’m glad you were recognised for making the club’s website!

I’m glad you were able to go to these banquets to dress up and get good food! Come to think of it, I didn’t attend anything like that, so I’m glad you’re able to do all the things I wasn’t able to 😀

Aw aw aw. I always feel touched when people put in a good word about me. I am sure you felt the same way. We are harsher on ourselves than we think. But you deserve to have that recognition as you really pushed through to achieve your goals even though it was hard at first. I’m sure you inspired many people, and I myself am very proud of you! I also remember you writing about banquets over the years :’)

I have no doubt the food was awesome that you wish your stomach could have stomached some more. ? ?

It’s great that you’ve got so many awards! I can tell they’re well deserved from the amount of work you put in – you always sound so busy!

The food sounds like it’s always amazing at these events. We never had anything like that at university, unfortunately. Your college sounds amazing – so jealous!

Those masks are gorgeous. I think more people should have masquerade-themed events. I’ve worn my mask once, and I’d love to be able to wear it again.

Looks like so much fun! Oh how I miss banquets. I remember when I was an engineering student there were so many banquets to go to, and that was great because there was so much food. At one for my then boyfriend’s (now husband) aerospace club they had this amazing crab dip and one of our friends kept putting little plastic dishes full of it in everyone’s purses to take home. We did end up enjoying them at home later that night, but we still had like fifteen little bowls of crab dip in our refrigerator the next morning.

Congratulations on the awards! You deserve them, and enjoy reminiscing about the past year. I love the masks – I’m half tempted to use the picture as a featured image on a future post with your permission, and credit given, of course. Also, you and your boyfriend look very cute.

Congratulations on your awards! You deserve them all. 😀 It’s great that you used your mistake as motivation. That’s the best way to deal with it. Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how you react to them that counts. Just shake them off and do better next time.

I love your dress and shoes! Serving looks! XD

Congrats on the two awards! You totally deserve them, and I’m so glad you were recognized for them 🙂 I think it’s amazing how much you’ve done to learn more and get involved with cyber security. While some people sit around and wait for opportunity to come to them, you worked hard and went for it. You’ve definitely made the most of your time in college!

I also love the dress you wore to the banquets. You both look great!

Congrats on all your awards! I probably would have had to try super hard not to cry as well! When someone is honoring you and thanking you for all the hard work that you’ve done, it’s such a sweet and overwhelming moment, at least for me. You deserve all of the recognition Nancy, because I know you’ve put in a lot of handwork. It’s really rewarding (literally! haha) to see all that hard work pay off.

I love that the second banquet was masquerade themed. I’ve never been to a masquerade themed anything, so it sounds like it would be a lot of fun!

I love the dress that you wore! It very cute but yet dressy and professional at the same time. It looks really good on you!

Congratulations on the awards and recognition for your hard work! And I love how you took your mistake and turned it into a motivation to do better. That’s always a fantastic mindset to have. And that’s so sweet and touching that your department chair can recall when your personal growth throughout your college years.
