Fall Break
November 10, 2013

Fall “Break”
I am currently on a 6-day weekend…. Except I’m spending most of it studying for my upcoming chemistry exam and history quiz. I practically have to learn 3 chapters on my own in the next few days. With that said, there is a month left before finals start! Speaking of school, I received a 9.5/10 on the last chemistry quiz, 10/10 on the history quiz, and a 20/20 on a paper criticizing world war 2 films for history :D. I’m happy that some progress is being made in my classes.

Random Thursday Adventure
On Thursday, I had an honors society meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, the president couldn’t get the projector to work. After 15 minutes, I volunteered to help troubleshoot the problem and got the projector to work in 2 minutes. Afterwards, I met up with a friend to hang out at the mall for a bit. I got a blended drink and a protein burger (a hamburger without buns) with animal style fries from In-N-Out. In addition, I finally found out what the iPad Air feels like and that Bloomingdale’s had its grand opening premiere the day after. Although I didn’t buy anything from the mall, I ended up going online shopping during the night so it’s still a win for me.

Friday!
Yesterday, I spent time with my boyfriend. As the usual, I cooked up some salmon with rice, green onion, and potatoes. He recently came back from an engineering conference and got me some neat-o souvenirs :D. Towards the evening, we went out to this pizzeria where we could choose custom and unlimited toppings on our pizza for $7.50. The pizza was around 10 inches so it is perfectly sized for individuals.. Though it took me three “sittings” finish the pizza on my own. Following that, we tried going to my boyfriend’s high school’s football game except it got cancelled because the other team forfeited. My high school had an away game and I wasn’t sure about whether or not the band was going. Instead, we ended up going to his house and got to sample some of his brother’s homemade banana ice cream.

Capture the Flag Post Season
Following my adventures with the cyber security competition, I am participating in the post-season event. This time, we are competing in teams. Since my school doesn’t have a team, I ended up joining another college’s team. For the first couple of hours, the scorebot interface didn’t work. After that was fixed, 3/4 of the servers malfunctioned. It took 10 minutes to load the scorebot pages and every time we try to submit a flag, we got logged out. The servers did get fixed 3~4 hours into the game and they extended the whole competition by 2 hours. Instead of the competition being 4 hours, it was 6. I felt as if my brain melted from the whole thing *o*.

At the end, I managed to make some nice scores through cracking some Windows passwords. The competition featured cryptography; which is something somewhat new to me. I tried deciphering some of the harder messages but it was a no-go. A teammate said one of the messages was coded in Playfair 6×6 so I spent some time trying to figure the “machine” out. From this whole experience, I realized it would be useful if I take a class later on about cryptography…. If it’s even offered. *o*. At the end, I placed 53rd out of 386 and my team placed 4th out of 58 nationally.

I will try to return comments sometime this week~

6 day weekends, FTW! You’re always studying Nancy (And I’m always saying that, I realise) but at least it’s paying off! Congratulations on your scores, that’s so awesome 😀

Super Nancy to the rescue, haha. I really wanna try In-N-Out… In fact I really wanna go on a food trip in the US. Food Network has been making me feel some type of way… especially ‘diners drive-ins and dives’ D:

Can join in on one’s of you and your boyfriend’s dates? I promise I won’t third wheel – you won’t even notice I’m there. I’ll be ghost. I’ll just be there for the good food. 😛

Sucks that all that happened during the competition but you still placed really high, so whoop!

I love Ofblue! You guys made it so much easy for me to set up my blog – it literally took like 5 minutes (apart from all that file uploading because there were thousands of them but you know what I mean)… also assuming that you are part of the host team 😛

Ah, I miss those long breaks during my undergrad days. Those were the best times, really. Sure wish I could do that again! Sucks you have to spend most of it studying though!

And oooh, WWII films? Which ones? I love anything to do with WWII, so I am curious 😀

Good Luck in your studies! Try to enjoy yourself on your break!

It’s always nice to get some quality time with a loved one =)

Speaking of exams, like you, I have to learn 3 chapters of Networking on my own. 🙁

Your Thursday was a random one. In-n-out burger was once in the Philippines only. They just tried if the burger would click. They kind of set up a stall that lasted only for one whole day.

Then your Friday was a food trip. Thinking of the food you mentioned just made me mouthwater right now.

..how does a hamburger without buns work? 😮
oh man i want the iPad air … not because i’m like one of those people who think “it’s a new gadget therefore i should have it” but rather because my major needs me to have an ipad for easier interactive design access… pfft, don’t think ipad air is available here already though 🙁 sucks.

omg a cyber security competition! computer science people always seem so cool in my eyes *o* you guys get to learn how to hack and all those stuff ;w; how awesome… sigh, i don’t have the courage to pursue CS course so i didn’t sign up for that haha i’m very bad with numbers too so wow i can see myself failing CS class already heh

one of my favorite books to read, the digital fortress by dan brown, talks about cryptography and decoding those puzzles and stuff to catch the criminal and it was just dang badass! ugh, nuff said. you CS people are so cool haha.
i do wanna learn cryptography… i like the idea of codes, they’re interesting like secret languages only a few people understand (unless we’re talking about trained people pfft)…. cryptography, morse codes, etc are just so interesting :3

I miss having a week-long fall break. Enjoy it while you can, and it seems like you’re doing a good job so far, despite all that work you have to do.

Great ranking, btw. Congrats! Considering that it’s a national event, placing 4th out of 58 is pretty neat.
