Fall Quarter
December 10, 2015

Fall quarter flew by pretty quick! I found myself counting to week 10 pretty quick compared to summer. This was a pretty eventful and busy quarter for me, as always. This means I am 2 quarters away from graduating! I suppose the biggest thing I wished I did better was getting more sleep. I found myself having 5-6 hours of sleep on most nights. Most people would argue that this is the norm, but 7-8 hours would’ve been an ideal range for me on a personal level.

Some New Experiences
  • Had an opportunity to become a TA and poster presenter.
  • Upgraded my desktop and cellphone.
  • Discovered an appetite for tofu and lessened my consumption for meat.
  • Went through the school’s pumpkin patch and corn maze.
  • Went to Escape Halloween.
Asset Allocation in Technical Decision Making

In a way, I regret choosing this synthesis class because it’s practically finance… But on the bright side, it’s an engineering-branded class and my boyfriend was in it. I guess doing the homework is one thing, but the professor’s tests is another. In a way, the class wasn’t too bad and I learned about calculating money through long math. . . 😹

Computers and Society

Hurray, this is my first “computer science branded” course! This class was decent because it was pretty easy for me and I didn’t have to spend a lot of time doing the coursework. The coolest thing we did in class was creating a program based on python. I think this is the go-to language to pick up for beginners who want to learn some coding.

Internet Security

I wish there is an extension to this class because the hands-on labs are exciting! We used Kali Linux and explored some cool system exploitation/analysis applications. We used these tools on Metasploitable 2 as a lab and it was a worthwhile experience learning about how different applications work. It’s a bit funny because the cyber camps I went to had workshops on Metasploitable and I was always confused about what purpose it serves. It’s basically a virtual machine of a vulnerable system and allows people to learn some cool skills through a sandbox rather than attacking real machines.

Network Security

This class was exciting because I learned how to program Cisco routers! Or at least the basics of it. Security is exciting and this class made me feel more excited for the field. I wish there are more security classes offered at school, but I am happy with what we have. From what I understand, these classes are meant to build a foundation to get people started in the field but everything else they learn comes from experience or the internet. In my case, I understood concepts better by connecting them to what I see at work.

Time for winter break!

Woot! Glad your fall quarter went by despite not getting enough sleep. for me my idea is 10 hours a day, but I can only get that on the weekend!

    I think it’s good you developed a liking for tofus! I used to hate tofu as a kid, but I like them as an adult and like them over meat, definitely. Though I’ll always like chicken the best XD;

Your classes sound like they are way over my head! Glad you learned a lot, though, and had a good time in them. Your Network Security class reminds me of my own experience in high school. I took a Cisco Networking class for two years that I never really learnt much because networking+hardware were concepts I could never grasp X_X; I think at one point we did programme the routers, but I can’t remember for sure!

I hope you’ll have a wonderful time during your winter break, Nancy. Hopefully you’ll get some rest and you will enjoy the hols!

Tofu is a healthier alternative to meaty food. I can’t give up meat completely but I can limit my consumption :3. My favorite chicken dish would probably be the chicken broths.

It’s so cool that you had Cisco classes in HS! I wish we had some of those, but I guess our budget wasn’t big enough for it. You go, girl! 😀

Wow, I’m glad your fall quarter went by quickly and awesomely!

Tofu is yummy, especially prepared with the right food and toppings.

Enjoy your winter break. Mine doesn’t start until after next week. Wish me luck on my finals!

Oof, 5-6 hours is not enough sleep for me. How do you function, Nancy? Haha, I have gotten into the habit of going to bed pretty early, so I tend to get around 8 hours of sleep each night.

Yay for the fall quarter being over! Your Asset Allocation class sounds a lot like some of my finance classes, being a finance major isn’t all bad. 😉 Enjoy your break!

Woot for accomplishing a lot in the fall quarter! Sadly, the lack of sleep becomes a norm the older you get. :’D I’m glad you’re enjoying learning about security!

Have a lovely winter break, and happy holidays! <3

That’s nice that the fall quarter felt like it flew by! I didn’t get much sleep in college either. I was ok back then, but I can’t deal with it now. I need my sleep!

Looks like you had a lot of great experiences! That’s too bad you regret the Asset Allocation class, but the rest sound interesting at least, especially the security ones 🙂 Have a great winter break!
