A Sunny Stroll
August 27, 2015

Last summer, one of the items in its seasonal bucket list was to go to the zoo. I didn’t expect to get a full-time job during the summer and already took a week off. Better late than never, I finally went to the LA Zoo on Tuesday to take a quick stroll along the trail and look at animals. The last time I was here was two years ago with my boyfriend when I had to do an assignment for anthropology. Luckily, the weather wasn’t too hot at the time and there were a few raindrops for a few minutes. I went as soon as the zoo opened so it made sense that some of the animals were still sleeping. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the little field trip.

Holla at the giraffes!
There were some interesting exhibits that I stumbled upon. One of them included observing the behavior of the gorillas. There was a gorilla who was eating leaves off of a branch (unpictured) and then all of a sudden, another gorilla charges at the leaf-eating gorilla and smacked the branch off of his/her hand. This made me wonder why it happened and if there is a backstory leading up to this behavior.

When I went to the Visayan Warty Pigs exhibit, I saw a family of six trying to build a nest. The mother and father warty pigs were the main ones working. There was one piglet who stood out by actively gathering the twigs around to contribute to the nest while another one was just wondering off on the side. The other two piglets were ~just there~ helping a bit. We know which piglet is the favorite child!

The exhibits I was looking forward to the most were the lion and tiger. The lion was sleeping (even though I tried meowing at him several times) and the tiger exhibit was closed at the time. I didn’t mind too much since there were other animals to look at. At the end of the walk, I went to the gift shop and bought 3 shot glasses to add to my ever-growing collection. However, my collection is for another post to talk about ;).

The next time I want to go to the zoo, I will aim for the San Diego Zoo. But for now, I’m satisfied and I’m back at work trying to catch up with the new IT tickets. It’s good to be busy at work because time passes by faster that way, or at least from what I’ve experienced. Work is also fun with the people who make the environment more lively. On the brighter side of things, school and move-in is in less than a month and I’m excited to go back! Hopefully, these next three weeks will fly by fast~

OOOOH! Yay for finally scratching off one thing off your bucket list 🙂 I can’t say I am fond of zoos, but I’m glad you had a fun time! It’s a shame the lion didn’t do anything (though I cracked up that you tried meowing at it! XD XD XD), and that the tiger exhbit was closed 🙁 I hope the next time you go to a zoo, you will see those!

I loved seeing all your photos! Thanks for sharing them, Nancy! I really like the flamingo photo. And you sitting next to the gorilla statue is such a cute shot! ^^

I hope you’ll visit San Diego Zoo one day! I heard great things about that zoo!

The zoo is hella fun and I go every chance I can go. I’ve been to a lot of zoos and museums. You look so nice and so do the pictures. There is something calming about being so close to nature.

My grandmother and grandfather went to the San Diego zoo and they loved it. I wanna go to that one. I want to go back to the Dallas one, because they put up animatronic dinosaurs around the park. I’m a sucker for dinosaurs. XD

It’s always good to take a break and actually stop and smell the roses, so to speak.

I haven’t been to the zoo in YONKS. This post has made me want to go to the zoo now!

I’m glad the weather was good when you went – would have sucked if it was torrential downpour. But then maybe you could have gone swimming with the penguins :3 I love your dress! You sho cute~

I actually snorted when I read the bit about the gorilla. Sounds like they are boyfriend and girlfriend, and the girlfriend smacked the leaf out of her boyfriend’s hand because he did something bad in her dream. *insert whole fictional story here*

Visayan Warty Pig as in Visayas in the Philippines? How cool! I follow this Filipino YouTube who actually has a pet pig who he named Sanggol, which means toddler/baby/infant in Tagalog (irrelevant info, haha). I love lions and tigers 🙂

Yaaaassss! I forgot you collect shot glasses, too. I’m only collecting from countries I visit, though. You must show us a picture of your collection!

Love the pictures – flamingos always look sassy AF.

I’ve always loved going to the zoo. It just makes me feel closer to nature haha. Also i’ve always been a fan of wild animals. Hope you had an amazing adventure 🙂

I haven’t been to the LA Zoo in seven years! Last time I went I hardly enjoyed myself–it was really hot and I’d just been dumped, which was made even more difficult because my sister and her then-girlfriend were visiting at the time and the girlfriend wanted me to “just get over it.”

But the lions were sleeping when I went too! They’re always sleeping XD I always want to see them because I love lions.

Don’t worry – I meow at the lions too, they’re always my favourite to see at any zoo I visit. Glad you had a lovely time!

Yay for the zoo! It looks like the animals have adequate space and aren’t just cooped up in cages. That’s good! It breaks my heart when they’re trapped in cages just for people to ogle at. They needs tons of room too!

    Your dress is so pretty!

Love the photos! The pink flamingos look divine. Last time I saw pink flamingos they didn’t look nearly as bright as these ones. 🙂

I have only been to one zoo in Australia. I went to one in Japan and it was a much different experience. The animals were different and they had a lot of sea creatures. I think all zoos are different so it’s good that you are still planning to go to another one one day. I think they are quite expensive to visit, I actually prefer aquariums for some reason. 🙂

I don’t go to a zoo for a while now. I guess it’s because I used to work in a museum just next to a zoo, and since it’s the only one in my city, I lost interest over seeing the same animals all over everytime. But I am always in for the elephants, man if there is something I love is a cute elephant. and everytime I go for the lions they are sleeping too! It’s so unfair!

That looks like so much fun! 😀 I love visiting zoos and the Giraffes are my favourite animal to see, but all of them have something unique and intriguing about them. I really love the photos! 😀

Aww! These photos are super cute Nancy! I hope you had a fab time – I haven’t been to the zoo since I was like 11 years old when we had to go on a school trip. In the UK, we have a zoo that has this bat cave that only the brave go in (or completely reckless like me) and the bats basically freak out and fly around as you walk through the cave. It’s scary and feels strange when you feel their wings/bodies!

Haha, meowing at the lion to get it’s attention! Hahaha, thats so cute! I’d probably do the same 😛

I haven’t been to any sort of zoo in ages! I’m not too fond of them but it looks like you had a lot of fun 😀

I love that photo of the flamingos! Pink is my favorite color and ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to see those animals in person. I’ve yet to though.

Also… funny thing is, I’m from the Philippines but I’ve never heard of this Visayan Warty Pig! (And I just went to Visayas a few months ago) I did Google it, and apparently it’s endangered? D: That’s pretty sad.

So, I mis-read Warty Pigs as Party Wigs and wondered why there would be a Party wigs exhibit 😛

I love how the meerkats are posing in the photo. Just chillin 🙂

I love the zoo! We recently had ours renovated, there is a whole new sanctuary for polar bears, my boyfriend actually worked on the building, and got to see them everyday. I have not been yet. Though I am sure your zoo has many animals ours doesn’t. For example the giraffes, and apes. I saw those in Orlando though when I went. The photos look really nice.

San Diego Zoo is on my must go see list. I have heard a lot. I may get to see Lisbon zoo next year, they have 4000 animals there so it will be cool to see something bigger than the one here.

I LOVEEEE ZOO! I am happy to see all the animals are well taken care of, because there are a lot of news on neglected zoo animals going around here in my country T_T The piglets are cute! and those meerkats omg they reminded me of my naughty cats! thanks for sharing all the photos and bring is for a virtual zoo visit XD

    • Nancy ☆ September 3, 2015 at 8:28 pm

I hate it when the zoo neglects its animals! What’s the point of having them if they’re not well maintained? I would think zoo animals should have the luxury life (aside from being in a cage or watched by people) compared to wild animals because they’re constantly being fed and have a shelter to live in.

  17. Bhairavee ☆ September 10, 2015 at 6:23 pm

    The photos are so awesome.
I have always loved visiting the zoos, but here in Mumbai, there is just one and even from there the animals are being shifted to National Parks or Sanctuaries.
I have been to the National park in Mumbai, and though it is a very pretty place, it lacks animals.
There is one big herd of deer, a hell lot of monkeys everywhere you go and some tigers who are under a lot of protection since they are endangered.

So I have my own bucket list of visiting all the different sanctuaries in India, which is a big task and when I complete that, then the ones in the rest of world!
