A Tale of Spring Quarter
June 7, 2015

It’s the beginning of finals week and what’s a better way to procrastinate than to make a recap post? This quarter was a bit different than the previous 2 quarters in some ways but in a positive light. Even though the header picture doesn’t necessarily represent the “eye candy” side of Cal Poly, the dirty-looking square building has a significant meaning because that’s where all of my computer classes are located at. I’ve been so busy this quarter to the point where I barely had time to dedicate much time to blogging.

This quarter, I took Interactive & Responsive Web Development, System Analysis & Design, Principles of Management, and Managerial Finance II. The hardest class would probably be finance because I’m not too keen on calculating the weighted average cost of capital and all of that good stuff financial people love. On the other hand, it’s good to know how certain costs are calculated and not be ripped off. My web development class was pretty fun in all sorts of ways. Initially, I thought I wouldn’t learn much because I thought the professor is only teaching students how to code in html but he threw in a curveball where we had to code an ASP site in C#. Even though I took C++, there are some differences adapted in C# but it’s pretty fun stuff! My systems class was pretty decent since it was about the logic behind how databases and programming are managed/drafted in a project manager’s point of view. Lastly, there’s management, which is an online class so we had to engage in a discussion on a forum about business topics (eg. what kind of regulations are commonly violated in a company?). I felt as if I never recovered from the academic setback the IT Competition made at the beginning of the quarter, but I think it’s worth it because of the experience. Overall, this was a challenging quarter in some ways but I’m still expecting the worse to come!

social life

I was successful in trying to have a social life outside of my room this quarter (to some extent). I made some new friends, made existing ones stronger, and got involved in more activities at school. I went to the martial arts club session twice in the new recreation facility that opened last September and learned enough basic knowledge to physically defend myself better. I also started talking to people and hanging out more this quarter so I’m happy about that. In addition, I’m on the E-Board for the forensics club! This is social in a way that I can interact with others who have similar interests. As far as hanging out goes, I had my fair share with my adventures to the South Coast Plaza/malls, movies, arcade, walks at the park, baseball game, foodie places, and banquets. Lastly, the date nights with my boyfriend is the cherry on top.

my impact

This quarter, I felt I made a positive impact in some ways (or at least more than the previous terms). The biggest one would be my involvement with the forensics club. As soon as I got elected on to the E-Board on April 30th, I took over the website project (that was going on for several months) and created a fully functional one within two weeks, designed/printed posters for our case display in the business building earlier this week, and helped taking care of acquiring custom banners + table throws for the club. In addition to that, I think I opened the door to cyber security to a group of high school students when I led a workshop on behalf of my boyfriend’s engineering club a couple of months ago. There are other smaller impacts I’ve made and I’m happy with what I’ve done so far.

room for improvement

There are always room for improvement! Identifying and working on them would help me become a better person. I suppose it’ll be easier if I listed them out…

  • Stop being lazy and be more outgoing at school. I’m normally outgoing but due to my laziness, I don’t really bother talking to people or going to places as much. But thanks to my laziness, I skipped out on applying for an e-board position for the other 2 CIS clubs (with an earlier deadline) and went for the position in the forensics club instead thanks to the timing.
  • Make use of the recreation facility because exercising = healthy.
  • Purchase groceries in a more accurate amount. Sometimes, the food I buy goes bad because I overestimate my future hunger *_*.
  • Plan and execute my scheduled tasks in a more organized matter. Often times, I wait until the last minute and scramble around to finish the task. “Due tomorrow? Do tomorrow!
  • Eat healthier. I got sick the twice these past few months because I decided it was a good idea to eat unhealthy food or food handled poorly. On the bright side, I’m eating less meat than before!
  • Make use of my potential. I feel as if I have the potential to make a bigger impact in some organizations at school and I will need a gameplan to execute this.
  • Keep my room constantly neat. There are times when I lag on putting away my clean clothes (fresh from the laundry) until the end of the week. Maybe it’s a typical college student thing… Maybe not…

This wraps up another school year! I can’t believe I’m finishing up my 3ʳᵈ year of college and going on to my 4ᵗʰ in the fall! I’m happy with how how things turned out and it was a great year for me. I’m happy to be part of the Computer Information Systems program and can’t wait to go into the information assurance track.

Sounds like you had a very busy, but productive quarter. 😀 Congrats on finishing up your third year of uni, Nancy! Woot! Good job with even tackling that finance class! I hope you do well on your finals 🙂

Good on you for trying to be more active in your social and non-school life. I think it’s good you’re taking some of the self-defence classes. It’s good you plan on doing things healthier for you! I hope that works out well for you.

Any special plans for the summer? I remember you saying something about working full-time, but I hope you planned some special trips or something for the summer ^^

No special plans for the summer at the moment :/. I’ve been hearing about possible road trips but it depends on when that happens. Though I do want to ~disappear~ for a bit at the end of July/early August 😉

Wow, you certainly had a very productive quarter. I’m glad you were able to have a social life, because I know you work so hard and it often leaves people exhausted, but I’m glad you made new friends and had fun.

That’s the thing about college, people know it’s for classes and degrees, but they forget that it is also another social event in their lives. No one can shun the social aspect of college forever. Heck, even I made some friends and I’m better for it. It’s made college a lot more enjoyable for me 😀

I can’t believe it either! Have a good summer~ You deserve it!

I hope your classes went well! I’m glad you were able to learn new things in the Web Development class. I’ve actually never used C# before!

That’s also great that you were able to make new friends and help the forensics club so much. I saw the posters you made when you posted on Twitter, and they looked great! I remember you wrote about the workshop before too. I hope some of the high school students look into cyber security now 🙂

That’s a nice list of improvements to make. I’m trying to eat healthier and exercise more too. I’ve been eating out too much, so I need to get back to cooking more!

Sounds like you’ve had a busy quarter! Good luck on your finals, and I hope you’ll be able to relax later!

Do correct me if I’m wrong, doesnt forensics have something to do with dead people? Q_Q Why would a techie be in a forensics club? lol

Good for you! I’m glad that you’re loving class. Our semester just started and my first day felt like a first week (maybe because I’m a senior) Anyway, I think nursing school will eventually kill me and my social life. The blogosphere is the only social life I get to have with my little time T_T

Computer forensics is what I’m into, nothing to do with dead people but more to do with investigating any crime digitally. Like if a guy tried to hack a computer and got caught, forensics will take place to discover the evidence of how the guy did it ;).

It sounds like you’ve had a great quarter! The classes sounded tough but you got through them! Yay! Outside of classes, it sounds like you’ve done so much! The martial arts classes must be very fun.

I am the worst at putting clothes away….I have piles of clean clothes everywhere!

Wow, this quarters classes sound challenging but fun! I’m glad you enjoyed them, though.

I wish I had participated in more activities in college. Might have made more friends. Anyway, am glad you had a chance too 🙂 Wow, a forensics club sounds hella cool.

Baha, I’m totally the same when it comes to food. I think I’m going to use it all, but end up having to throw away some of it 🙁

Can’t believe it’s been 3 years already! Good luck for your fourth!
