Today, I turn twenty-three. I still can’t rent high-end cars during trips but at least I can enjoy some fine wine 🍷.  I’m happy with my accomplishments so far and will continue to strive for more. Adulthood has been an interesting journey so far, given that it takes some time to mature and develop. I’m very far from being perfect and that’s completely okay. What excitement is there if I have nothing to improve on?

As I grow older, I encounter and realize different things. Whether others went through the same thing or discovered something different, it’s all a learning process. It seems like my recently yearly tradition is to come up with a list of something. This year, I thought it’d be a good idea to share some of my thoughts as an adult so far. Some of these may seem basic but I’m happy with owning up to them.

  1. There is always a chance for self-redemption. Failure is temporary, success is forever. I made a bad decision in the past that completely pushed me to an undesirable route. I kept my head up and did whatever I could to bounce back.
  2. I do whatever makes me happy as long as it doesn’t harm other people.
  3. Comparison is not good for the soul. Everyone lives through different conditions and life is not a cookie cutter. Something can make one person happy but not the other.
  4. I am not entitled to everything. I need to work for the good things in life.
  5. It feels better to earn my own goods. I get that sense of achievement on a personal level.
  6. Reward/treat myself when I deserve it. If I find a good enough reason, why not? It is called retail therapy for a reason…
  7. My gut instincts tend to be right. Gotta trust and listen to it!
  8. I don’t need validation from other people. Someone can have bad intentions and unnecessarily mislead me. At the same time, don’t shut people out.
  9. Be honest and own up to my mistakes. People make mistakes. Sweeping things under the rug can come back to bite in the future.
  10. I never stop learning. Education is beyond institutions.
  11. Toxic people need to go. If someone is not treating me decently, they don’t deserve my friendship.
  12. Don’t forget my roots. It’s the reason why I got this far!
  13. Supermarkets and home stores suddenly became interesting to walk through.  I’m looking at you, Whole Foods, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and Sur la Table.
  14. Skincare becomes more important the older I get. Or did it become a thing because I can finally afford them?
  15. Just because I can afford it doesn’t mean I actually need it.
  16. Getting overly excited about earning interest in my savings account and the gains in my 401k/retirement.
  17. Definitions of beauty, success, intelligence, and etc. are dynamic.
  18. Making food and drinks at home is cheaper and possibly healthier than buying it at the shop. This is how I stay away from Starbucks.
  19. The feeling of accomplishment when I pay my bills in full and a few weeks early.
  20. Learning to be comfortable with going to the gym and being proud of finishing an exercise.
  21. There’s no point in stooping down to pettiness. Nothing gets accomplished in this phase.
  22. Pleasing yourself > pleasing others. If someone is unhappy with how you’re taking on life, it’s their problem.
  23. Some things take time. Healing, savings, advancement, realizations, and etc. Until then, keep working towards it.

happiness isn’t about getting what you want all the time
it’s about loving what you have and being grateful for it

Happy belated birthday you wonderful human being. “If someone is unhappy with how you’re taking on life, it’s their problem.” is a favourite of mine. I’ve slowly been experiencing this in my life recently. Some people hate what I’m doing and can’t stand the fact I step out of my way to do something that I want / achieve what I want. Some have said that I only do it to “show off” but I actually do it for me, I work for my own happiness because yes, working my butt off gives me a sense of everyday achievement and happiness.

I love you Nancy! Keep rocking <3

Happy belated birthday Nancy!! I totally agree that becoming an adult or growing older is a learning process. I appreciate your list of thoughts/reflections. I can relate to all of them but I particularly liked “I never stop learning. Education is beyond institutions” SO TRUE. Learning never stops.

I also really loved the quote you included at the end! It’s important to remember what we have to be grateful for.

Happy birthday again, Nancy! You sound incredibly grounded and realistic. You have a good head on your shoulders. I wish I had been as unapologetic and sure at 23 as you are now. Wishing you well as you move forward!

Happy Belated Birthday (again) !!! ✨

I am so, so proud of your achievements to date and honestly, it’s been amazing to see your grow through your blog. Can’t believe we’ve known each other for so long – look how far we’ve come! I’m also so happy we got to finally meet last year, and don’t worry I will be back soon 💕

“Comparison is not good for the soul.” < I have to remember this every time I go on Instagram because as much as the photos that people take make it look like their life is amazing, I should really be focusing on my own life too!

Love you, Nancy! You're one of the most inspiring people I know and I can't wait to keep watching your journey and see everything that you accomplish 😘

Happy (belated) Birthday! I think that’s a great list, and I especially like how much “self-care” things you put in there. Learning to focus more on yourself and not compare yourself to others is important 🙂 I hope you had a fun birthday! Keep being awesome!

Happy belated birthday! I think you’ve accomplished a lot so far at such a young age 😀 Adulthood is definitely an interesting journey, and you learn and experience a lot as you go through it.

You’re on point about failure being temporary and success being forever. I’m glad the bad decision you made in the past didn’t push you off the road of redemption.

I agree with your 4-6. Working for the good things in life to where you earn them youself is a good feeling. There is nothing wrong with rewards when you deserve them :3

You definitely never stop learning. Education is a life-long journey. Whether you learn from a formal setting or through your experiences with people, what you take from them will help you. It’s also good you’re being more conscious about your heath, and good on you for doing skincare now! I don’t recommend waiting until your 30 like I did, haha!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I really enjoyed reading them and seeing some of the things on your mind. Never stop being awesome, Nancy! <3

Loved number 17 and it’s so true, what one person defines as success is usually completely different to the next person. Congrats on turning 23 as well, I actually just turned 23 a few months ago as well!

Belated happy birthday, Nancy! I hope your birthday was everything you had hoped for and more. I loved reading this list – it speaks nothing but such truth. And I agree with 23 – everything takes time but working towards it, two steps at a time and you’ll get there.

Love you, girly! Keep being awesome ♥

Happy belated birthday Nancy. Number 3 is something I can relate to a lot. I use to compare myself to lots of people when I was young, now I don’t care! Their lives are different from mine, and I shouldn’t envy what they have and appreciate what I have instead.

Number 14…it’s better when you can afford them! 😉

I feel like no matter how old I get, there will always be something new to learn, and I’ll always think, “Now, I’m an adult.” But there are so many different stages so I don’t think there is an actual end point to becoming an adult. And everything on your list is so true! Sadly, there have been moments where I’m not as quick to realize them in the moment. To moving forward!

I hope you had a good birthday! This post is so lovely, I think it’s amazing how we are always learning things in life – even lessons that we didn’t know we needed! xx

  18. Amy ☆ June 21, 2017 at 4:35 am

Hope you had a lovely birthday and got everything you wanted! Really enjoyed reading this post. You definitely learn a lot more as you get older, about yourself and others. Some good things, some bad things.

I struggle with not buying something when I have the money. I always used to spend just because I could, but now I see the value in saving for something much better. It’s always nice to treat yourself, just not for the sake of it!

I agree that you have to work for things in life. Yeah, some people might just get lucky, but there’s no better feeling than achieving something you worked hard for. I never feel satisfied with myself unless I work my hardest!

    Have fun being 23!

  19. Linda ☆ June 21, 2017 at 9:18 am

Happy birthday! Can’t believe we’re the same age! Love the list you created. Your mindset and approach are very mature for your age :). Hope you have a great year as a 23-year old!
