What’s In My Bag

What's in my bag
I’ve published a couple of “what’s in my bag” posts over the last couple of years but never made one about what I carried in my work bag. Even though the items are roughly similar, I still enjoy blogging about it. On my last bag post, I mentioned about wanting to buy a Burberry bag. My boyfriend and I went to a Burberry store back in September to look at the bag. Thankfully, I snapped out of that state of mind and realized I should allocate that money towards a new car instead. It was worth it because I ended up spending the Burberry handbag’s cost and then some on a year’s worth of car insurance upfront.

Long story short, do whatever you want with your money and choose your own priority.

My work provided me a bulky backpack to use for our day-to-day activities. Considering how I’m 5’0, the backpack is practically half of my height and feels a bit excessive for what I actually carry. I also carried a personal handbag (pretty much the handbag/items from the previous “what’s in my bag” post) to somewhat feel “complete”. I found out that it’s not a requirement for us to use the company-issued backpack so I went to look for a big handbag that could carry everything I need. I wanted to spend less than $100 and found the Fossil Emma Tote (sorry, Coach πŸ‘œπŸ’•). It’s a nice bag for the price I paid and definitely does the job.

This bag acts as a two-in-one where I carry both my personal and work items. I usually have to think twice about what I want to carry because I have pretty limited space and still want to have the ability to use the bag’s zipper. I also have to carry my gym bag and breakfast bag into the office.

Here are the things I carry in my work bag:

  • Work laptop (14″)*
  • Manila folder with some scratch papers*
  • Notepads
  • Clinique pouch
    • iPhone charger / Apple earpods / Apple headphone adapter
    • Pilot G2 pens – black / purple / pink / blue / gray
    • Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ / Clinique Chubby Stick
    • MAC eyebrow brush / MAC eyebrow pencil / Sephora eyebrow pencil
    • Whiteout / house keys / Printer + elevator badge
  • Gum
  • Coach wallet
  • Car keyless remote
  • Beats Studio 2.0 Wired Over-Ear Headphone (noise-cancelling magic)
  • 24oz Water bottle*
    * = not included in the pictures below

When I first started this new job, I bought a monthly calendar and realized that the 20 pages added to the unnecessary weight. I started to utilize our Outlook calendar back in December and enjoyed time-blocking my schedule left and right. I learned to be reasonable and take distractions/breaks into account. I still have a physical planner for personal usage but may convert to a digital planner in the near future. I’ve watched calendar applications evolving over the years and I’m starting to feel comfortable with its usability and features.

i’ve been thinking about writing this kind of post too but we’ll see later. i feel like whenever i come across posts like this, the bags shown are always so fanceeey, like branded bags and stuff. mine isn’t branded and is certainly not a ‘lady handbag’ since a). handbags aren’t my thing, b). i’d rather splurge on video games than bags and c). i don’t like lady handbags since i just…i don’t know, i feel old and ugh-so-feminine :)) i end up wearing classic looking satchel bags or backpacks instead πŸ˜›

still, i do know certain brands have bags that i find lovely; brands like kate spade, coach and maybe burberry have lovely collection. i’m like low-key in love with kate spade’s style, LOL.

oops, where is this comment heading. anyway, back to the original topic at hand…

dang gurl, those beats headphone must be expensive! i don’t mean to offend you but your job must pay so nicely i’m so jealous πŸ˜› though i don’t like beats (i think beats is overrated and is usually worn by white douchebags tryna be kewwwl), it’s so cool if the job pays really good. here in indonesia, the payment sucks and everything imported is so hella expensive.

your eyebrow game is so strong, man! i’ve been wanting to buy eyebrow products, just a simple one from the drugstore with wax and powder. gotta start small, right. i envy you for knowing how to polish your brows! πŸ˜€
i wish my makeup pouch only has items from one specific category but i tend to carry like…well, a few things for touch-up; stuff like concealer and compact foundation, for instance. and of course, blotting sheets! how do you live in California (cmiiw in case you don’t live in california) and not use blotting sheets!? LOL assuming that asians tend to have combination-oily skin, that is.

speaking of clinique’s chubby stick, their eyeshadow chubby stick is something in my wish list but yeah, clinique is too pricey for me πŸ˜›

regardless, this was an interesting read. thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed reading this Nancy! Over the past few years, I recall your what’s in your bag posts and enjoy seeing the changes from school to work! πŸ˜€

I’ve tried using a tote bag for my everyday/work but I always feel like my bag is too heavy to carry on one side so I always opted in for a backpack. Being a typical student, I bought the Kanken backpack and it’s been my go to since. Thankfully my work is much more casual – well unless there’s an important meeting, we have to dress up and I feel pressured to use my handbag! Thanks for sharing the Emma Tote bag though, it looks like a perfect size! I’ll have a look in the future when I decide to fully move into using handbags!

I think it’s pretty neat that you have a little pouch for things. I usually just use the sections of my bag but as you can imagine it can get messy and disorganised very quickly. xD

Those headphones look awesome – been looking for a noise cancelling headphone for ages but I never knew if I should invest or not! Bookmarked for the future πŸ˜›

I ditched a physical calendar/diary ages ago, I just hated the added weight haha! I’m really digging my digital calendar lately – I can’t imagine going back now.

I pretty much pack similar things in my bag but since I meal prep every week, I also have lots of food and cute boxes for each little snack haha!

I could never do a “what’s in my bag” post… I have way too much crap in such a tiny purse. BUT OMG. I use Pilot G2 pens as well – the 0.38 point because I’m picky like that.

ALSO NANCY!!!! I love your ID badge holder – I’m in love with cats and I’m always on the look out for kitty badge holders hehe. Right now, mine is has Rosie the Riveter with the saying “we can do it” to remind me to that I can get through my shifts!

I love the Coach wallet too. Simple and small. I’ve been wanting to switch wallets recently so I might just check out a Coach outlet soon :3

I love the “What’s in My Bag” posts! It’s interesting to see the different things each of us carry. I thought about doing one but I wasn’t sure if mine would be very interesting lol. Maybe I’ll do one anyways!

That’s also great you found a cheaper alternative, rather than using a name brand bag. I used to carry messenger type purses but resorted to using a small backpack instead. It’s amazing how much you can fit inside!

I heard beat headphones are really nice! I like the multi-colored pens you carry and that’s great you found a way to lighten your load by changing (or at least considering) to digital calendars/planners.

Your marble background looks amazing! Definitely upping your flatlay game! I’ll have to sort myself and get one, as my brown carpet background is getting so overused now. No doubt I’ll regret being lazy when I look back!

You carry way more than I do in my work bag. I pretty much just have a book, my phone, purse, tissues and my bus pass. If I did a ‘What’s in my bag’ post it would be so boring!

Your beats look so cool. I’d absolutely love a pair, but I’m so awful with headphones. They’d end up breaking instantly if I got hold of them. Love the colour of yours!

Your to-do list notepad is gorgeous. I definitely need to start putting some sort of paper in my handbag. I usually just make notes of things on my phone, then write it up on paper when I’m home, which is far too time consuming.

How do you carry so much, Nancy? Surely you don’t even need to go to the gym when you’re carrying all that around!

    • Nancy β˜† April 23, 2017 at 10:10 pm

It doesn’t cost much to invest in some neat flatlay backgrounds! Hehe, I wish carrying 2-3 bags is enough for me but my body demands more calories to be burned X’D.

  6. Tara β˜† April 14, 2017 at 10:29 pm

Burberry bags are so expensive! I remember seeing the cost and nearly fell out of my chair. It’s good you decided to spend that money towards your car insurance! I think that’s a better investment. The Burberry bag can wait.

That’s nice of your work to provide a bag, even if it’s bulky because of your height (I’m short, too, so I can relate!), so I can understand you buying a bag of your own. You carry quite a bit in that bag! It’s good you have a pouch to organise your smaller doodads with πŸ˜€

I feel the same about my planner — carrying it became cumbersome, so that’s why I went to the digital route with my planner. I feel that I found the digital one that works for me, so I no longer need a physical calendar. Do what works for you! If you find one that works, then yay! πŸ™‚

Thanks for sharing your workbag’s contents! I also love the way you arranged your flatlay! So pretty, and the marble background is ace!

I totally love this kind of post because I am also curious about somebody’s content inside their bags! Hahaha! This makes me wanna share what’s the content of my latest bag though! But for sure it’s not as much as you do!

If that was really inside your bag so probably you use a bigger bag every day! Thanks for sharing a bit of yourself with this kind of series babe! Hope you had a great day! I hope you could visit my blog too soon and we could have a lil chitchat and follow each others IG! πŸ˜€

I bought a bag for work too. They gave us an obvious laptop bag ‘bag’ and I take the public transportation to work so it wouldn’t do (I’m terrified it might get stolen cos I work the night shift and an ex-colleague got threatened with a knife so they could get his laptop bag). I bought a backpack though that was really cute but very functional, and I find that it works better cos it doesn’t give me any back pains. My work laptop is heavy!!!

I love that with your limited space, you still brought your eyebrow kit with you. πŸ˜›

For my day job, I utilize the outlook calendar. But for all the other things, I have a super simple no nonsense planner. It’s thin and does its job. I remember my To Do list more when I write it down by hand. πŸ˜€

  9. Chynna β˜† April 17, 2017 at 12:08 pm

Your bag is cute AND a decent price! πŸ™‚ I also love your to-do notepad.

I can’t live without my physical planner, partly because it’s Pusheen and way too cute to give up. I’ve tried using a digital planner but I love writing things down.

I used to have a pair of Beats headphones, but they broke! Only because of my clumsiness. I haven’t had the change to replace them, and I still have my other Sony ones anyway. But Beats are sooooo good when it comes to noise cancelling!

I always carry water with me at all times. I am always in the need of hydration! My purse is so messy – you’re inspiring me to clean it up. Haha!

I did a winter internship where they gave me a backpack (for the duration of my time working there) but I never used it haha. I think about my backpacks A LOT. I don’t like having too many bags, so I’m very particular when it comes to choosing one. I like backpacks because they’re practical, but I also try to choose one that’s simple yet chic so that I can use it for school but also a casual day trip πŸ™‚ -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

The Pilot G2 pens are my favorite! I love how their ink flows without hard pressing. I like that you carry a travel sized Clinique moisturizer around. Probably a smart thing for me to start doing as well!

Oops my comment got squished into a one line because of a text smiley πŸ™
I love “what’s in my bag” posts and videos ❀ I’ve been meaning to do one but I can’t seem to finish writing it πŸ˜‚
You definitely did the more practical thing by choosing to buy a new car than to buy a new Burberry bag! I would’ve chose the car also.
I also opt for big handbags than small ones because I find that I carry so many things and they can’t all fit into a small purse lmao.
I also love Pilot pens, but the ones I prefer are the G-Tech pens πŸ™‚
Your to-do list pad is so cute! Where did you get it?
I aspire to also have a breakfast bag for work because I always eat out and therefore doesn’t save much 😣

    • Nancy β˜† April 23, 2017 at 10:09 pm

A small part of me doesn’t feel like being practical and wanted the bag instead X’D. I got my to-do list pad from Target’s dollar section :).

  14. Georgie β˜† April 24, 2017 at 8:14 pm

Hahaha omggggg FOSSILLLLL! I love Fossil. πŸ˜† They recently came out with a new tote (I think it’s the Rachel one) that has coated leather, and it’s taller vertically than it is horizontally. I want it so badly! I don’t actually have a bag that will fit my laptop as well as other items. I have a bag that has a small handle that is good for just my laptop, but I can only put it on my wrist and not on my shoulder. 😞

It’s good you don’t have to use the work-supplied bag. I got a tote from work and it’s nice for carrying my laptop, but sometimes I don’t feel like carrying a tote, and want an actual handbag. πŸ™‚

I was thinking about getting a Burberry bag but after thinking about it… it’s always going to be highly priced and I would rather buy a cheaper handbag that is still good quality.

I only carry one notebook in my handbag. It’s funny how much weight can be added just by having a thick notebook, so I chose a smaller and thinner one. πŸ˜†

I definitely need to do a bag post myself at some stage!
